The Third Step to Breaking the Resistance to Change: Identify the Fixed Mindset & Get Free
Over the last three weeks , we uncovered your Immunity-to-Change. This week we get to the heart of what drives the resistance to change---your mindset, aka the Big Assumption.
How the Mindset Drives the Resistance
Hypothetically, let’s use the map, you set a goal (col. 1). A few weeks pass and you can’t understand what’s causing you to behave like col. 2. You really want to speak your truth but something stops you. Here’s the resistance: in your mind, you assume that IF you take a positive action towards speaking your truth (col. 1) THEN something bad will happen to you.
Determining Your Big Assumption
Complete column 4 of your Immunity-to-Change map.
Take one of your col. 2 behaviors and ask yourself what bad thing do you think will happen after taking that action.
Let’s use the map for an example: Take I default to agreeable (col. 2) and flip it: What bad thing do you believe will happen if you disagree? If I disagree, then I will lose my partner (col. 4).
Repeat this activity with three of your strongest col. 2 behaviors. Put a star next to the big assumption that best explains your column 2 behaviors.
Getting Free
Tying the map together: Those big assumptions (col. 4) set the behaviors (col. 2) in motion, the behaviors (col. 2) protect you from feeling the fears (top of col. 3), you then make commitments (bottom of col. 3) that compete against your goal (col. 1).
